Color Sorting Hunt

Sorting is an important skill for preschoolers to learn.  It involves grouping similar items based on a common attribute.  Sorting lays the foundation for more complex cognitive skills later down the road!

Here is a color sorting game made by re-purposing a drink carrier that you get from a fast-food restaurant.  Next time you order fast food, say “yes” when they ask if you want a drink carrier!  And if you get the kind with a circular bottom, you could just have your preschooler color each section with a specific color.

Here’s what you’ll need:  a drink carrier, 4 different colors of construction paper, scissors, glue, and items to sort (Lego’s and pretend food worked GREAT at our house).

2.  Glue it to the inside of the carrier and trim where necessary.

3.  Continue until all 4 sections are finished.  Add a color square for each color on the outside of the carrier as well.

4.  Send your little one off on a hunt for colors!

5.  Put the sorter away for another day!

The only problem with this activity was that there were only 4 sections and therefore only 4 colors.  Big Brother was quite perturbed when he found orange, white, and black items yet he had no place to put them.  Maybe I’ll make another one with orange, purple, white & black!
