The Penniless Princess is the newest DVD from Veggie Tales, releasing on August 11th.
Here is the description from the Veggie Tales website:
“Sweet Sara Crewe has everything a little girl could want – a loving family, lots of friends, and a closet full of frilly dresses! But when life takes a turn and Sara goes from riches to rags, will she realize that her true worth lies not in what she has, but what she has in her heart? Find out in this inspiring new story from VeggieTales that reminds kids who they are in God’s eyes.”
Sara Crewe moves from Africa to London with her father, who is in the military. He goes off to war, so he sends her to a prestigious boarding school where she is under the strict, miserly, and compassionate-less direction of the Headmistress. She is teased by some of her classmates, but manages to forge strong friendships with an eccentric girl as well as one of the young servants. Sara’s world is turned upside down when she is notified of the death of her father (as well as the loss of his fortune). Newly orphaned, Sara is allowed to stay at the boarding school but not as a student…as a servant. Although Sara has always had a tender heart towards others, she now learns to love no matter the circumstances. She shares the little food she receives with others and even reads the Bible to her friends. Meanwhile, one of her father’s close friends is desperately searching for her with no luck. He himself has compassion on the poor servant girl that lives next door, only to find out that it is Sara Crewe! He adopts her and promises to take care of her.
As with all of the Veggie Tales movies, this has been a hit in our house (despite the fact that it is geared more towards little girls). It was a great lesson on contentment, compassion, and finding one’s worth in God rather than things! I also love the way that this movie encourages our children to show love and compassion to others. There was one part of the movie where Sara shares what food someone has graciously given her with someone else in need–the look on Big Brother’s face during this part was priceless! This movie created the perfect opportunity to discuss our call to share with the less fortunate.
