Summer of Reading

 

Make the summer of 2013 a summer of reading! Encourage your children to develop a life-long love of reading with these suggestions:

 

1. Read aloud to your child for at least 20 minutes each day.  Even if your child can read proficiently himself, he still needs to be read aloud to regularly so that proper inflection and fluency can be modeled. Lunchtime is a great time to read aloud…and it keeps little bottoms in their chairs focused on eating and listening. :)

 

 

2. Sign up for a reading incentive program.  Chances are, your local library has one. Our library gives children a book prize for reading for 20 minutes every 10 days. That’s a lot of prizes if you make a commitment to reading throughout the summer!

Many book stores also offer reading incentive programs, including Barnes and Noble. Scholastic is also hosting their own Summer Challenge. Even Chuck E. Cheese is offering an incentive to kids who read everyday for 2 weeks.

 

 

3. Read in unusual places. Read outside, read in a blanket fort, read at the pool (just make sure it’s a book you don’t mind getting a little damp…and not a library book! :)

4. Make learning letters, sounds, and sight words lots of fun!  If your still working on teaching your child letters, sounds, and sight words make sure to make it interactive. Here are some of our favorite ways to have fun while learning:

5. Get some new books from the library or bookstore.  We just bought four new books at our library’s book fair and they are the boys current favorites. Check them out here.
