Toddler Time: Off and On

This is one of Little Brother’s favorite games.  He pulls up the stool and turns the light on and off, all the while I’m saying “On” and “Off” respectively.

Simple?   Yes.  Emphasizing language development and antonyms (opposites)?  Yes and yes.

Enjoy!

Toddler Time: Walk the Line

Balance is a tricky thing for a toddler.  This one safe way to ease into learning to balance.  Just lay a piece of masking tape (or painter’s tape) on the ground and encourage your little one to “walk the line”.

At first, he/she will probably just try to keep one foot on the line while the other one “scoots” beside it.  That’s perfectly fine!  As your child gets a little older and more comfortable with “the line”, he/she will be able to put one foot in front of the other like on a balance beam.

And, of course, you’ll probably have a little bit of this…

He looks so innocent as he’s attempting to pull up that tape!

Toddler Time: Coloring on Foil

For this activity, I just taped a piece of aluminum foil to the table and let Little Brother color with his crayons on it.  He’s had lots of experience coloring on regular paper and I wanted to try something different…

He did not appreciate my efforts, however (surprise, surprise).  He was really frustrated that he couldn’t see his coloring very well and didn’t seem to like to the texture.

It seems as if we might be getting a head start on those terrible two’s… :)

Toddler Time: My Body Parts Song

Little Brother had absolutely no interest in singing this song with me (probably due to the blocks, large exercise ball, and train table in his immediate eyesight). But I think it is a fun song nonetheless (especially for younger toddlers), so I decided to share it with you regardless of how non-participatory Little Brother was in this video.

And yes, I know I have a terrible voice.  I’m swallowing my pride as I speak type.

The Body Parts Song (to the tune of  ”Where is Thumpkin?”)

Where is your nose?  Where is your nose?
Here it is.  Here it is.
Touch it with your finger.  Touch it with your finger.
Just like me.  Just like me.
(Insert a different body part for each verse:  eyes, ears, tummy, toes, etc)

Perhaps your child will be more interested in it than mine was!

Toddler Time: Simple Color Sorting

We’ve been casually working on our colors with Little Brother.  Right now everything is “yellow”.  Big Brother did the exact same thing, only everything was “blue”!

Sorting is an important concept for young children, though this is our first deliberate attempt with Little Brother.  I wanted to keep the variables (colors) small since it’s an abstract concept for children to grasp in the first place.

Here’s what you’ll need:  2 pieces of different colored construction paper and various items in those colors.

1.  Gather some items (of two different colors) from around the house.  All I had to do was open my pantry door and get some items from our organized school/craft supplies!

2.  Put all of the items together in a bowl.

3.  Lay your 2 pieces of construction paper on the floor and let your child get started “sorting” the items and placing them on the corresponding color.

Heap on the praise!!!!  You might have to do some modeling, especially if this is your first formal attempt at sorting.  Little Brother absolutely LOVED it when I cheered and clapped for him…can you tell???

Little Brother was insistent that he only wanted one item on the paper at a time!  :)

How do you teach your child about colors?
