67 Ideas for Fun and Learning This Summer

67 Ideas for Fun and Learning This Summer

Summer is almost here!  Woo-hoo!  I love nearly everything about the summer (except for the bugs).  I love the warm weather, I love the pool, I love longer evenings, I love having my kids home.  I’ve compliled a list of 67 activities that you can do with you child(ren) this summer.  Some of these things are plain ol’ fun and some encourage learning.  I hope you will incorporate a mix of both into your long summer days!  :)

Rather than creating a calendar, I thought I would make a list of activities you can pick and choose and cross off as you complete.  I intended to provide a printable list, but I’m having some technical difficulties.  You can always copy and paste the text below into your own word processor or print the selected text straight from the screen.  :)

Outdoor Alphabet Track

Outdoor Alphabet Track

It is finally feeling like spring around here so we decided to have some fun outside!  This activity was so simple and both boys enjoyed it far longer than I expected.   It was especially great for my little “mover and shaker”, who sincerely appreciated the pairing of gross motor learning along with letter recognition!  :)

All you need is sidewalk chalk!

Make a path by writing the letters of the alphabet on your driveway.  Please excuse the cherry blossom petals also on the ground…my husband already tried to take credit for scattering flower petals for me this morning.  :)

Little Brother rode his tricycle on the path and we sang the ABC song together as he rode over each letter.

After that, we sang it again while walking over each letter!

The end of the alphabet led to a giant pot of mulch…perfect for rambunctious boys to climb.  :)

Rainbow in the Snow

As I shared on my Facebook page yesterday, we recently got the second most snowfall ever on record where we live.  The last total I heard was 14-16 inches!  We have been enjoying playing together in the cold, white stuff…and spending lots of time inside as well!  We decided to make some colored ice cubes to play with and ended up making a rainbow in the snow!

1.  Add some food coloring to a bowl of water and pour into ice cube trays.  Freeze until solid.

All our colors were frozen and ready to go outside!

2.  Use a stick or dowel rod to make the lines of a rainbow in the snow.

3.  Have your child start adding the colored ice cubes on the lines!

Ta-da!

Admiring his work!

Don’t let it stop at making rainbows…throw in some letter-making and name spelling as well!  :)

We also a few of the primary color combinations together in the snow to see what happens when they begin to melt.

This was definitely a hit and something we will be doing on our next snow day!

Pine Cone Creatures

The making of these Pine Cone Creatures was a very open-ended activity that captured the attention of both my 4-year old and my 2-year old equally!  All you need are some pine cones, glue, googly eyes and whatever odds and ends you have around the house.  We added some pom-poms (compliments of CraftProjectIdeas.com).

First of all, we collected our pine cones.

Then, we gathered all our other stuff.

Start gluing the stuff onto the pine cones.

Apparently, Little Brother doesn’t know how to use an appropriate amount of glue.  :)

 Isn’t he cute?!?!

Just FYI:  Prior to children, I said my kids would never wear tacky character t-shirts (like the one pictured above).  But as I’ve quickly learned when it comes to anything related to parenting…NEVER say never.  ;)

Putting the googly eye on his eye!

You can make these as simple or intricate as your child wants.  You could even add glitter!  My boys decided they wanted theirs rather simple.  :)
