February Mini Blessing Bags

February Mini Blessing Bags

Back in late December, we made some mini blessing bags to keep in our car and hand out as we saw someone in need. We made several bags and they are now gone. Anytime we saw someone holding a sign, we would roll down our window and hand out a bag. My kids love being part of such a simple way to show compassion. One man said with a huge smile on his face, “YES!!! I needed a new pair of socks!”

As it turns out, the sandwich size blessing bags seem to work better than the gallon-size. They can easily be stuffed into pockets and aren’t cumbersome for the individuals we gave them to. Although we can’t fit a lot into the bags, the few things we do include seem to be greatly appreciated by everyone who receives them.

Contents:

-A new pair of socks

-Chapstick

-Peanut Butter Crackers

I have decided that we will make six blessing bags every month and try to include some type of thematic printable. Making six at a time works out well because packages of socks often come in 3’s or 6’s and packages of chapstick come in 3’s. This month’s printable is a simple heart with the words of John 3:16. You can download your printable hearts here.

  1. I do this as well! I put Kleenex, socks or hats or gloves, band aids, toothpaste/toothbrush, hand sanitizer, bottled water, gift cards to subway/McDonalds,etc, among other things.

  2. This is such anot awesome idea! I would really like to do this myself :) Although we don’t see 6 people per month in need where I live. Well, maybe during the summer. We would mostly be handing them out to the same people every time …

  3. I absolutely LOVE this idea. I have had this idea on my heart for a few months now, I plan on including a small Gideon’s bible – I love the idea of a warm pair of socks – so thoughtful – I always try to give a small bit of money to someone with a sign, but now, i will give a little more – Thank you for your wonderful inspirational idea!!

  4. We just did this in our Girl Scout troop. Our bags were actually made male/female they had socks, mints; travel size shampoo, comditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, deoderant, lip balm and some had a few extras. Since we were also working on our Safety pin and First aid badge we made mini First Aid kits in Altoid tins. We also added a simple note to make (I hope) to make them smile.
We were lucky enough to get a lot of donations, from dentists, hotels, and others.

  5. I’ve been traveling a lot, and coming back home to the heat of The Sunshine State, I believe when I go to make these, I will use a quart sized bag (I’ll be keeping them in my car) and including a bottle of water! Maybe even a small tube of sunscreen & a pair of flip flops- I’m sure everyone could customize these to their region and the time of year. I unfortunately find myself wondering if these folks really are in need (shame on me, I know) and I don’t usually have cash on hand, so this is a really good idea. I want to never question, but always be generous and non-judgemental. I have never been more moved as the one time I was stopped at a traffic light, and I saw a young man in a vehicle ahead of me actually stop again (after giving the man some cash) and took off HIS OWN shoes to give to the man who was in need. That really renewed my fiath in humanity and the younger generation. Thank you for all the ideas that will heip us bless others.

  8. I didn’t read all the comments, so forgive me if this is a repeat. Every fall/winter, our dollar stores sell multi packs of those little hand and/ or foot warmers. (They are kind of like glow sticks, except they produce heat instead of light.)
Much more affordable than from Walmart, Target, etc. I don’t think they last as long, and in my testing, a few will fail to activate, so I usually include 2 of each just in case.
I second all suggestions of socks, lip balm, fast food cards, etc., but for a less seasonal message, consider
” I prayed for you while I made this gift. I will never know your name or your situation, but I care about you. If each of us can be a little kinder, more loving than the world around us, amazing things happen through ordinary people. Like you and me.
In His Name and for His Glory,
    Penelope
