Supermarket Scavenger Hunt

I often go to the grocery store by myself on the weekends, but occasionally I’ll take the boys with me. Inevitably, someone ends up getting upset about not getting the preferred oatmeal or the candy at the checkout counter.

Our Zoo Scavenger Hunt was such a hit with the boys that I thought it would be fun to make one for the grocery store!

You can download and print the one I created, but chances are your grocery list doesn’t look the same as mine, so I thought I would show you how to make your own as well.

1. Think of the things you buy most frequently. Take pictures of those items the next time you go shopping. Yes, people will look at you weird and ask you what you’re doing. Persevere, my friend!

2. Open a new Word Document.

3. Type your title at the top.

3. Insert a new table. Go to “Table” at the menu on the top and then select “Insert Table.” Insert the number of columns and rows you prefer, mine was 3 columns and 4 rows.

4. After that, drag the little square at the bottom right of the table to resize the table.

5. Type the item at the top of each section of the table and then insert your pictures. Put your cursor inside each square of the resized table and then go to “Insert” and “Picture from File.”

Print and enjoy!

Remember, you can also use mine. Just click and print!

Try it out and tell me how your children like it! I’ll update with more pictures once we use it at the store. :)

  1. Such a great idea for my three year old! You could put it in a sheet protector and use it over and over. I cut out pictures of foods from ads and glued them to index cards and wrote the word underneath. I got a picture photo album from the dollar bin at target and slid the cards into it. I only put in the foods we were getting from the store and as we get them Benjamin takes them out and hands them to me.

  2. This looks like a great, fun idea! I do know that my local Winco has a sign that says no photo or recording devices. Why? I’m not sure. So I’ll probably just use yours :) Thanks!

  3. Hi, Jenae. This is a great idea. Thanks for the step-by-step instructions. I need those! Actually, your chart looks great, though, so I may just try that one. This is a good way to keep kids interested at the grocery. Renee

  4. wow. thanks for sharing! definitely going to try this next time me and my two boys go shopping. maybe i can actually get all my shopping done without having two grumpy, bored kids. thanks!!

  5. This inspired me! Only I was thinking of doing the same thing only I was going to print the photos out onto 4×6 index cards which fit nicely into those inexpensive little brag photo albums (you can get them at the dollar store). This way 1) I can customize the book each week as to which grocery items we actually need and 2) the plastic pages protect the pages from grubby hands (we usually get a free cookie from the bakery at the start of the shopping trip).

  6. Thanks so much for the step by step instructions! We are going to the zoo tomorrow, but when I went to print your zoo hunt, I realized that your zoo has a lot of animals that our zoo doesn’t. Thanks to your help, I was able to make a customized zoo hunt for our local zoo!

  7. I love this idea, thank you! its reminded me of a game I play with niece on occasion. (When she is at the store w her Mom- we talk on the phone and go over the alphabet, one by one, and she had to find objects that begin with that letter.)

  8. I just came across your website today and I must say I love i! I love this scavenger idea for the supermarket. However, the thing I like the best is that you actually put how you made it! I think that is amazing! Now I can make one that is uniquely ours! Thank you so much!!!

  9. I teach Culinary Arts and I allow the Special Needs students to go to the store for me to buy my groceries. I made this template for them and just check the items I need when we need more supplies. They know exactly what I want and there is no question about what it is. It gives them an opportunity to be independent and they also like learning about foods that they have never eaten before!

  10. I just found this scavenger hunt and I wanted to say thank you so much for posting it! I teach students with severe disabilities and we go to the supermarket every Monday and this will be so great to use with them!
