A Lesson Learned: Thirsty

I have a confession to make. Since finishing 2 very intense, grueling, wonderful Bible studies at the end of May, I have hardly spent any time reading my Bible.

Sure I have gleaned encouragement in my faith by reading this book and a little of this one. And I have asked myself why I believe what I believe after reading this one (even though I disagreed with some of it).

But I have hardly spent any time in the inspired word of God, for which there is no substitute.

This is what I want long to feel. I want to be thirsty.

“You, God, are my God,
   earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
   my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
   where there is no water.

 I have seen you in the sanctuary
   and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
   my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
   and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
   with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

 On my bed I remember you;
   I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help,
   I sing in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you;
   your right hand upholds me.” -Psalm 63:1-8

Isn’t that beautiful?? David, the author of this psalm, had such a passion for God.

I want that passion.

One thing I have learned these last few years is to ask for help when I don’t feel the way I want to feel. When I don’t love the way I want to love. And so, I’m asking God to help me love Him more deeply and passionately.

I want to thirst for time with the Lord. Thirst for His presence. And thirst for His purpose for my life.

  1. AMEN! I am the same way, I feel guilty of not reading my bible . I spent too much time on a lot of things and I do not have an excuse for not doing my daily devotion and my quiet time with the Lord.

  2. oh! My pastor preached about that Love Wins book…….NO good! We do NOT all get to go to Heaven. :((

  3. That Psalm is beautiful. Life seems to get me all wrapped up and I have not been reading my bible either. I need to set aside time each day for the Lord.

  4. I’m with you. My pastor used that Psalm in his message a week ago, in his sermon about engaging in worship. My husband is a teacher, so during the summer our schedules get way off and I just don’t get up early and get in the Word. Hopefully in a few weeks that will all change! Thanks for the encouragement that I’m not alone! :)

  5. We all get thirsty, don’t we? Thanks for sharing and know that you are in my prayers! A great way that I have kept in scripture (with all the craziness of summer!) is this 100 days of scripture memorization http://stoneofcompetence.blogspot.com/2011/06/100-days-of-scripture-verses-days-1-20.html We are on day 65 but you could start any time. I keep them on index cards on a binder ring and my husband and I practice our verses each day. It has been a great way to meditate on scripture and keep it in our hearts throughout the day. Another excellent book that helped me when I was going through a slump is calling The Begging Place by Becky Blackmon. I would strongly recommend it! http://www.publishingdesigns.com/show_book.php?isbn=0929540573
    Hope this helps. God bless!!
