Apple Garland (The Fruit of the Spirit)

“But the Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” -Galatians 5:22-23
All of these characteristics are things I wish to see first and foremost in myself and also in my children. I especially need to work on patience, kindness, and self-control. We cannot receive these characteristics fully without God in our lives.
Here’s what you’ll need to make this apple garland:  8 cutouts of an apple, contact paper, construction paper, hole-punch and yarn.
1. Cutout the apple and the center (or do what I did and print off a clipart picture of an apple and then cut it out).
2. Cut a piece of contact paper big enough for all 8 apples and peel off the backing. Lay it down, sticky side up, and place the apple cutouts on top.

2. While you’re doing this, have your little one get started tearing pieces of red construction paper.

3. Once you have a big enough pile to start out, let him begin placing the pieces of construction paper inside the apple cutouts.

This was a great opportunity for us to talk about “inside” and “outside.” :)

 4. Cut another piece of contact paper the same size, remove the backing, and carefully place it on top of the apples.

5. Cut the apples out.

6. If you choose, write the fruits of the spirit on the apples using a Sharpie:  love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control.

7. Punch a hole in each of the apples.

8. Thread the yarn through the holes.

9. And hang! I happened to conveniently already have this “Fruits of the Spirit” sign hanging above our kitchen sink!

*I just realized as I went to Bible Study this morning and there was a mention about the Fruit of the Spirit that I completely forgot one of the Fruits of the Spirit…faithfulness!!! I am so sorry!

  1. I LOVE IT!!! We have a fruit theme in our kitchen and I have been wanting to incorporate the fruits of the spirit. This will be an activity for this weekend in our home. I do not homeschool ( I WISH!!!), but I am a teacher and LOVE to supplement on the weekends and at night. Thanks again. So glad I found your blog.

  2. i am excited to do this activity with my 2 yr old. i found this blog through moneysavingmom.com today. (on #6, "faithfulness" is omitted) excited to read the rest of your blog! thank you!

  3. I just got it from Microsoft Word, but I would actually just recommend making your own drawing on construction paper and then cutting out the center. That way, the border is a little thicker, which I think looks better. :)

  4. This is so fun! I am totally going to do this with my what-can-we-do-next 3-year-old :) Thanks so much for sharing. Your blog is excellent!

  5. I love this. I think we will try to use it for family home evening some time soon. Such a good idea for a scripture activity for the kids to enjoy. Thanks for sharing!

  6. This totally inspired a craft my son and I made today – I will link this as the inspiration in my post for sure!

  7. Love it! We're going to try it tomorrow because I actually have everything on hand! (I'm not normally a crafty person with lots of supplies in her house). Where did you get your Fruits of the Spirit sign? I'd love to find one.

  8. I go beggaring. Seeing the beautiful boy diligently plying his craft moved me. The wooden plaque above it is simple, direct and not flashy or showy, but real. I know this is an old post, but would you kindly tell me where you found your fruits of the spirit plaque? Or where I might look for one similar? Many thanks. books.n.coffee(at)gmail.com Michaele

  10. we did a similar project but used tissue paper to create a stained glass/ sun catcher effect. Very fun project!

  11. Just found you through Parents – Best Crafts For Kids nomination – and this craft is so timely! Our school has Gal 5:22 as the theme this year, so this is going to be a fun way to help my grade-one learn the Bible verse! Looking forward to exploring your blog once school settles down a bit.

  12. I loved this craft! I am homeschooling my preschool boy and had decided that this is a verse we were going to memorize this year. Then I came across your website and this craft was PERFECT. I even had him cut out most of the apples (not as neat looking as if I would have done it, but it gave him that scissor practice), and he wrote 3 of the words. So it encompassed so many skills. Thank you so much for your website and your wonderful ideas!

  13. Just stopping by to let you know that I have featured your project on Fun Family Crafts! You can see it here

  14. Hi!

Love this blog! Getting so many ideas to do with my son – who is needing schooling to be more “fun”. Mommy definitely needs help in the craft department. So not my area. Thanks for the great ideas :-)

  15. stupid question…but the wall plaque above your sink…did you make it or did you buy it? If you bought it, where did you buy it? I am not a crafty person :)

  16. I was looking for a Fruits of the Spirit” project for Vacation Bible School for pre-schoolers, this is perfect!
Please may I have permission to use your images for my churches Vacation Bible School? Thanks!
