Bob & Larry {Stained Glass}

Big Brother is on the verge of obsession with Veggie Tales. He LOVES all of the characters and will watch the movies over and over and over again. I happen to think they are pretty funny, have a GREAT message, and I actually enjoy watching them (unlike other kid’s shoes, uh-hum…Diego). We limit his TV watching to about 45 minutes each day…some days it’s a little more and some days (not many lately) where it’s none at all. If he had his choice, though, he would watch Veggie Tales nonstop!

I can’t help but laugh when I see this picture…do you see the loving gaze of admiration in the mirror???

We’re throwing a {family} birthday party for Big Brother tonight with a Veggie Tales theme. I came up with the idea for these Bob & Larry stained glass (or sun-catchers) after looking at the Fruits of the Spirit garland still hanging over our kitchen sink. I think they’ll make cute decorations for the party. :)

Here’s what you’ll need:  red and green streamers (you could also use tissue paper or construction paper), clear contact paper, white paper, markers, and (OPTIONAL) a laminator and laminating pouches (I bought this laminator on Amazon when it was a Gold Box deal for $17.00 and then bought the generic pouches at Sam’s. If you don’t have a laminator, just put another sheet of contact paper over the top like we did for the apple garland).

1. Cut a sheet of contact paper that is 8″x10″ or smaller. Remove the backing and use a marker to trace the outline of Bob (circle) and Larry (oval) on the sticky side.

2. Let your little one tear pieces from the streamer and place on the sticky side of the contact paper. Make sure to press down the pieces of streamer as flat as they will go. BTW–tearing is GREAT fine motor practice!

3. While he/she is working away, draw the eyes and mouth of both characters on a sheet of white paper (as you can see, it took me a couple tries). I used just plain copy paper, but I would recommend using either construction paper or cardstock so the sun doesn’t shine through this part.

4. Using a glue stick, glue down the eyes and mouth.

5. Turn it over and cut on the line that you previously drew to make a clean outline. If you DO NOT have a laminator, make sure you place the other piece of contact paper on top BEFORE trimming.

6. If using a laminator, place Bob in the laminating pouch…

…And slide on through! Cut out, leaving 1/4″ gap, when you are finished.

The birthday boy was pretty stoked about his new pals!

If your children aren’t Veggie Tales lover like mine, you could easily adapt this for another favorite character (like Elmo!). Have fun!

Never seen Veggie Tales…you can peruse some of their DVD’s here.

  1. How cute. Big Brother sure looks excited for his birthday party! Have fun – hope you are all feeling better.

  2. I just recently found your blog and love it. Your blog is a wonderful reminder to keep being intentional with how my son and I fill our day. My son is turning two in a week and we are doing a family Veggie Tales party as well. I think we will have to try this fun project out too!

  3. Instead of a laminator, I just use white glue. I use an acetate to start, add a layer of glue, then tissue papers, finishing off with a thick layer of glue (basically, a tissue paper sandwich). I let it dry overnight, and the next day, I just peel it off the acetate, and viola, a less expensive suncatcher. I do it for fall leaves. I hope others find this helpful.

  4. I used this same method to let my kids make their own placemats! They absolutely love doing these, they are pretty quick to do, my kids didn't want to stop! lol

  5. Thanks for this great idea! We had just checked out "Rainbow Fish" from the library, so we made a fish using this method. They turned out great and the kids love them.

I've been reading your blog for a few months now and really appreciate all your easy, frugal, fun activities for young kids! Thank you!

  6. I am a preschool teacher and we do a craft similar to this once a month to hang in our windows. You use liquid starch (found in a bottle by the laundry detergent, I put mine in a spray bottle to use easier for crafts), tissue paper and wax paper. Lay down the wax paper with a shape (BOB) drawn on it… spray some liquid starch on the wax paper (to keep the tissue from flying away), once all the tissue is laid down covering the shape spray some more liquid starch on it (get everything wet, not puddling but wet), put another piece of wax paper on top and push (gently) out the air bubbles and then let it sit to dry. I do flip mine once or twice, it is dry by the next day, then cut the shape out and enjoy.
