Corduroy Math: Learning with Buttons

Corduroy Math Learning with Buttons

Since I was a little girl, Corduroy by Don Freeman has been one of my absolute favorite books. I was so excited that it is this month’s pick for our Virtual Book Club for Kids.

Little Sister and I have been loosely working on one-to-one correspondence and number recognition lately. Little Brother has been working on skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for some Corduroy Math, inspired by this timeless book!

I created some teddy bear printables for this activity. The first 5 pages include numbers 1-10 and the remaining 3 pages are blank teddy bears. I couldn’t find green overalls, so we settled for a green shirt. :)  Laminating them is optional. I keep a bag of random buttons that have come with new clothes (and other buttons that I find here and there), so that is what we used.

Please Note:  Young children can easily choke on buttons, so I would not recommend this activity for children under 3. Be sure that your children are closely supervised thoughout this activity’s entirety.

Download the printable bear cards here.

Below you will find two different activities that use these cards.

Say the number aloud and count with your child until you have added the appropriate number of buttons.

Little Sister loved putting the buttons all over the bear. :)

You can either have your child add the buttons or you can put them on there ahead of time. Have your child count by 2’s…
