Olympic Cookies: Gold Medals & Olympic Rings

Are you having a party for the opening of the Olympics? Or would you just like to have a festive treat? Make some Olympic ring and Gold Medal sugar cookies to celebrate!

We used our tried-and-true World’s Best Sugar Cookie Recipe (which you can download and print directly from the link). Once you follow the instructions to make the dough and chill it, you’ll be ready to roll it out!

In addition to the ingredients listed on the recipe, you’ll need two circle cookie cutters–one that is at least a 1/2 inch larger than the other, food coloring, gold sprinkles (or metallic food coloring), and a licorice rope. I went to three different stores and couldn’t find a licorice rope for the ribbon on the medal, so I ended up just using pipecleaners.

 1. Roll out the dough 1/8 of an inch thick. The dough will puff up slightly during baking, so you’ll want to make sure it is rolled out well.

 2. Grab a little helper and start punching out the dough.

 3. Use the larger cookie cutter first and then use the smaller circle cookie cutter inside of it.

 4. The outside of the circle will become your Olympic rings and the inside will be the medals. Bake 8-10 minutes at 350 degrees and let cool completely.

5. Prepare your icing. Divvy out the icing on this recipe (it is amazing) into separate bowls and add your food coloring. To make the black food coloring, I just mixed all the colors together until it looked about right.

 6. Ice your cookies using popsicle sticks or new paintbrushes.

For the medals, I first iced each cookie with yellow frosting…

…and then smothered them with gold sprinkles while the icing was still “wet”.

Yummy! The Olympics never tasted so good! :)

  1. These are the cutest Olympics cookies!!!!! What a fun way to celebrate- maybe during the opening ceremonies as a special treat:).

  2. ooooh, I’m thinking we’ll be making these for the opening ceremony too! My boys have been begging to make sugar cookies and while I generally avoid food dye like the plague (food dye and active little boys are a bad mix), I think we’ll make an exception for this!

    Thanks for the fabulous idea!

    1. I completely agree! I notice a HUGE difference in my boy’s behavior whenever they have had lots of dye and sugar. We try to avoid it as much as possible as well…but I did let them have one of these cookies as an extra-special treat.
