Tangy Turkey Sloppy Joes
Post by Contributing Writer Amy
On a cool fall day, there’s nothing like the aroma of these tangy turkey sloppy joes simmering on your stove. Fall also comes with lots of activities to run the kids to and from, making it hard to get in a home-cooked meal. When I need something quick and easy, these little joes are my go-to. My picky husband is a big fan of them and all three kiddos gobble them up every time! The ingredients are few and easy to keep on hand, so I can make them anytime. They always remind me of fall because apple cider vinegar is the secret to their tangy deliciousness.
First things first! Brown and drain the turkey with 1/3 cup chopped onion. You can finely chopped green pepper or celery if you want to make it go farther and get in some veggies, too. To save time, I have chopped up onions and other veggies in snack sized bags in the freezer. Then I can just dump them in still frozen while browning ground turkey. I love this mix and chop tool for browning turkey and hamburger. Seriously, I don’t know how to do it without one!
Stir in 1/2 cup of chili sauce, 1 Tablespoon honey, 1 cup of ketchup, and 1 Tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. My family actually likes more of the apple cider vinegar, but start small and you can always add more at the end when you taste it!
Add a dash of salt and pepper and a couple squeezes of yellow mustard, and you’ve got it all! You can sub regular mustard with about two teaspoons of ground mustard as well.
Taste the sauce and add more apple cider vinegar if you’d like more tang. Bring to a boil and simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes. Serve on the bread of your choice or even on baked potatoes. Just add some frozen veggies and fresh fruit, and you have an easy and healthy meal for your family. Here’s to a warm and tasty fall!
