The Cat in the Hat Builds That Activity

The Cat in the Hat activity

This month’s Virtual Book Club for Kids is exploring the beloved classic The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss. I don’t know about you, but I am a huge Dr. Seuss fan. I love the playful rhyme and repetition within his stories! Even though they can be non-sensical at times, they are so much fun to read aloud! Be sure to check out all of our Dr. Seuss activities (and all the fun we have had).

For this month’s activity, we decided to do something that can be easily differentiated for all ages and abilities:  from toddlers to tweens! Whether you are working on patterning, capital and lowercase matching, word families, or even alphabetical order…you can easily adapt this Cat in the Hat activity for your child’s current abilities and interests!

Here’s what you’ll need:

-Small plastic containers, all the same size (we used Noosa containers)

-Small placeholders (we used some foam blocks I got in the Dollar Spot at Target)

-Hot glue gun

-White Duct Tape

-Red Duct Tape

Our family happens to be obsessed with Noosa yogurt (and I happen to have a problem hoarding plastic containers). Both of these came in handy for this activity. :)

1. Use your hot glue gun to attach the foam blocks to the center of each plastic container. This will ensure that the containers don’t stack as neatly and leaves enough room to see the red and white patterns.

2. Attach red and white duct tape to the outside of each container. Make sure to have an equal number of red and white.

3. Let your toddler get started creating a pattern using the plastic containers.

Little Sister wasn’t too interested in creating a pattern…so we counted how many containers we could stack instead. Like I said, this is so easy to differentiate! :)

For Little Brother, I decided we would work on word families. I used a Sharpie to write rhyming words on the outside of each container and then had him stack the word families in separate “hats”. :)

Big Brother wanted in on the fun too. :)
