Free Subscription to Thriving Family Magazine!
I have to tell you a story.
And I’m going to use a word I’m not at all comfortable using.
When I tell this story to my friends, I usually whisper “the word” or spell it out…because I’m that embarrassed.
Several months after Big Brother was born, I was reading a very popular magazine for “parents” while Big Brother was napping. I didn’t subscribe to this magazine…they just sent it to me (probably from registry databases or something). Though I didn’t always agree with the “advice”, I enjoyed reading the magazine…until I got to one of their features on recommended products for moms.
I think my mouth dropped open about 6 inches. There, in this parenting magazine, was an editor’s pick for a lipstick-shaped vibrator. Yep, you read that right…vibrator.
I was perplexed and angry. Why in the world would they be advertising such a product in a magazine for parents??? Relaxing lotions, diaper bags, hair accessories for mothers on-the-go, those things are perfectly fine to advertise. But that? Really? I felt somewhat violated. I threw the magazine away, but not before canceling my “free” subscription and writing a pointed letter to the editor.
Fast-forward to a couple months ago, Prince Charming and I were enjoying a leisurely date night at Barnes and Noble. We were looking through the magazine section and I found a magazine called Thriving Family. I spent several minutes perusing the articles and felt refreshed and empowered to bring my children up in the Lord. What a breath of fresh air this magazine is for Christian families!
I then received my first copy on Saturday and every article felt relevant to my life. I contacted Focus on the Family to ask whether I could offer several subscriptions as giveaways and today they called me back…
They let me know that they just decided to offer this magazine for FREE! Just go here and sign up. Or you call call 800-A-FAMILY during business hours to subscribe. If you sign up online, you will have to enter your credit card information, though you’ll never be charged. (Many of you are reporting you don’t have to enter credit card info!). I hear you! I have unsubscribed from several free subscriptions for similar reasons. I feel insulted that editors think we want to see that kind of garbage.

I just found your blog over the weekend (from Makes and Takes I think!) and was thrilled right away to hear your Christian voice. I love Focus on the Family and was raised on their books and tapes! Thriving Family is very recently new and I thought that was so exciting!
I have noticed the same thing in my Parents magazine. Last November they had an article that used a very strong curse word, and then the next month suggested that same sex marriages were healthier for children then non-same sex. So thanks for the information on a magazine that will be healthier for this mama to read. :)

Awesome! I don't see why "toys" can't be part of a Christian marriage (and would love to hear y'alls thoughts on why!), but I really like Thriving Family and am so excited about this!

I am sad to say I was once reading one of those Parent/Baby Magazines and it was an article about how the mom was considering an abortion. She already had 2 kids but a 3 just wasn't convenient for her family.
Sad.
