Top Eleven in ’11: #2
For the eleven days remaining in 2011, I’ll be counting down the most popular posts of the year. The posts you see have had the most visits according to Google Analytics.
Here’s #2…
I call this post the ‘Pinterest sensation’. If I ever doubted the effects that Pinterest could have on my traffic, this post has reassured me that Pinterest is, in fact, a great contributor to blog growth!
The idea for making this homemade liquid laundry soap was born in the throes of Financial Peace University as a way to cut down on our monthly expenses. After using it exclusively for over 8 months, we are now alternating one week with the homemade stuff and one week with the store-bought stuff because our whites just weren’t staying as white as we hoped. My husband wears a suit and tie to work every day (and often a white-collared shirt), so our un-white whites were a major problem for us. But it still has made a HUGE difference in the amount of money we spend on laundry detergent!
And yes, we have an HE machine.

In regards to your soap not being potent enough, I’ve started a new regime that seems to help. I make homemade powder detergent (1 bar soap, 1 cup borax, 1 cup washing soda). My husband works in a restaurant and it just wasn’t cutting the grease. We also found we missed having a smell. So I use the powder this way: 1TB powdered, 1 TB Tide. Makes the tide go much further in my HE washer, but seems to work well. Also, some dawn dishsoap in the greasiest of loads, in the bleach cup. (just a tsp or so). Thanks for your blog. One of my fav finds this year.
Have you ever tried using peroxide in your white cycle? I’ve been using it and it seems about the same as when I used bleach. I also use soap nuts which are amazing!
