5 Ways to Get More Traffic from Pinterest

If you have a blog, you have surely felt the positive effects of Pinterest in recent months. Pinterest has completely revolutionized the way that bloggers promote their posts and the way that readers find ideas and articles!

Pinterest is currently my biggest traffic source…some months the traffic I receive from Pinterest might even be double the next highest traffic source! I am, by no means, an expert when it comes to Pinterest, but I have found a few “Pinterest strategies” that have helped me get more traffic from Pinterest.

1. Take GREAT pictures (or purchase stock photos). Because Pinterest is a visual catalog, it is absolutely imperative that you learn to take quality pictures if you want to get the most out of this awesome resource (or purchase professional stock photos)! Invest in a good camera, turn off the flash, and use natural light. I am obviously NOT a professional photographer, but I have learned some strategies to use my camera more effectively. You can read a few of my photography tips here. I would also highly recommend the DVD series Learn & Master Photography!

2. When possible, use a vertically-oriented picture or a collage for the top picture of your post. With the way that Pinterest boards are formatted, vertically-oriented pictures or collages stand out MUCH more than horizontally-oriented photos.

3. Add a text description to your photos. Having a description on the photo itself helps ensure that when your photos get repinned, the other Pinterest users can easily see what your post is about. You can use free websites like picmonkey.com or ipiccy.com to easily do this!
4. Rename your pictures.  Pinterest has now started automatically placing the title of your pictures into the description the pins. If you don’t want “IMG 341” to be the description that people re-pin, make sure to change the title of your pictures within your post. Make it simple and include keywords that describe your post, which will also show up on search engines.
5. Build your Pinterest following. Make sure that a link to Pinterest is prominently located on your header or the sidebar of your site. Frequently link to your Pinterest boards on Facebook and Twitter. When you host giveaways, consider having those who enter follow you on Pinterest as an extra entry.

  1. Thanks for the ideas! I never thought about using vertical photos instead of horizontal ones. Since picnik closed, I’ve been searching for a photo editing site where I can do collages and write on the photos. I will be sure to check out the two you recommended. Thanks again. This blog is helping me stay sane while raising my two year old and anticipating another little one soon!

  2. I’m a recent convert to pinterest, partly because I wanted to use it to get more traffic for my blog. The renaming picture thing seems VERY helpful! I will have to do that, and add pictures with text that describes what the post is about. Plus… I need better pictures sometimes.

  3. Thanks for the advice – I’m new to blogging and pinterest and loving doing both – I found your site through pinterest.
