This idea came from Weather Wiz Kids (though it doesn’t really have anything to do with weather). It didn’t work exactly like it was supposed to, but it was still really cool nonetheless.
Here’s what you’ll need: a bowl, milk, dish soap, and liquid food coloring (gel food coloring will NOT work…believe me, I tried it).
|
1. Pour 1 cup of milk into a shallow bowl. |
|
2. Add 3 drops of each color of food coloring an equal distance apart. |
|
3. Put 1 drop of dish soap in the middle… |
|
Watch what happens! |
|
The colors were supposed to mix instead of just swirl…but it still was fun and neat to watch! |
Wonder why this happens? Go here to find out!

Oooo… love the pretty color swirls! I also like to use Karo Syrup for color mixing…. I got the idea from this link- http://www.4cforkids.org/news/karo-syrup-color-mixing
Anyways, you put 3 globs of karo syrup on different sides of a plate, and dye one blue, one red, and one yellow. Then you have the child tilt the plate. To expand, we then use the karo syrup to paint with. It dries super glossy and shiny. Just keep it away from pets, we learned the hard way about that one hahaha
What a fun idea! I know my kiddos would love this one. I love your site and am a new follower!
I saw this on the Steve Spangler site. When he does it, he puts the soap on a cotton swab and holds it on the surface of the milk in the center of the food coloring dot. We have had it swirl, but then when we adapted it, it works.
That is pretty neat!
i tried it today with gel food coloring and nothing happened. now I gotta figure out where to find liquid color
This is a good tip particularly to those new to the blogosphere.
Brief but very precise information… Appreciate your sharing this one.

Do you know if this would work with soy milk instead of regular milk? We have a dairy allergy and although I know they don’t have to touch it, I’d rather be safe than sorry!
