Music time anytime!
I’m so excited to be here! My background is in music and performance, so that’s what I teach in the home. I love icanteachmychild.com because it helps me fill in teaching the things outside of my strengths. Thanks a ton, Jenae!
We use music to learn just about everything here – memorizing the alphabet, scripture verses, heck, even piano songs! This is a song one of my violin student’s mom’s introduced us to when WonderGirl was 2 and still having trouble identifying colors. It was an instant hit, and still is – we can customize it to whatever we’re learning!
The supplies you could use range from pictures or words written on pieces of paper, to any objects you want. For learning the colors, we use circles of colored foam sheets glued to popsicle sticks. It’s to the tune of “Polly Wolly Doodle”:
(The words you trade out for other colors are italicized.)
Blue, Blue is the color I see / If you have blue then show it to me / Stand up and turn around / Show me your blue, and then sit down!
We’ve used it with learning shapes:
And the alphabet:
We’ve been doing this with my one year old – I’m sewing plush alphabet letters out of fabric scraps so he can be as tough as a one year old boy can be on them. With the alphabet, we only use two or three letters at a time to keep it less complicated, and by the process of elimination he’s getting really great at identifying A-D! Next on my to-do list is numbers.
I started A Treblemaker to help myself and others as I teach my daughter piano and violin, and remind me of what I did in her early years so I can give my son a strong foundation too. By making music a central part of the learning process when my daughter was very young, it helped make the transition to learning an instrument second nature for both of us, as well as help set the groundwork for our teacher-student relationship.
If you’re interested on slipping music into your daily activities, or even thinking about teaching them an instrument, come join me at A Treblemaker! Thanks again, Jenae!
I've forwarded this to all my parents of wee ones. Excellent presentation!
I LOVED this post! Thank you so much for sharing. The song is so cute and is perfect for many concepts. We already tried it this morning with colors (like the video) and Ori had so much fun!! We just used colored markers/crayons since I didn't have any cute color signs. Thanks!!
We just did it too and I used crayons. Alexandra especially loved the spinning part! She is already asking to play again. And I used about 6 crayons. I picked out a "granny smith apple green" instead of your normal green and as I said "green green is the color I see" she said…Mommy but this is light green!" I stand corrected. HA! Great activity – we will definitely do it with letters too! Thanks!!!!
I love these ideas – especially the fabric alphabet letters (they'd be perfect for my 21 mos. old), if only I was a little better with the sewing machine! Thank you!!
I LOVE the letters; I am going to start making them as gifts for friends with little ones. Great ideas, thank you for sharing these!
I must admit, i really like this idea of teaching music. I would like to try this too.
