Simple Story Map Printable for Kindergartners

We are slowly but surely making our way through our 30 Days of Reading Fun for Beginning Readers series (we are on Day 23 to be exact). I already did a printable for reading comprehension, but wanted to add this Simple Story Map Printable for Kindergartners as well.

This simple story map is perfect for kindergartners as it relies solely on pictures for identifying what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. We also encourage children to think about the characters and the setting, but this can all be done verbally as most kindergartners do not have the ability to write this information quite yet (at least at the beginning of the school year). But we should always introduce these terms to familiarize our kids with a rich reading vocabulary. Words like “author”, “illustrator”, “setting”, “characters”, and even “plot” can be introduced at a very young age.

For this activity, I read the book Corduroy by Don Freeman. Then I simply asked my 5-year old daughter to draw what happened at the beginning of the book (1), in the middle of the book (2), and at the end of the book (3). My 9-year old son wanted to get in on the fun and helped her draw the bear in the first box. :)
