Phil Vischer, one of the creators of Veggie Tales, recently began a new endeavor to present the Bible in a child-friendly DVD format. This series is called What’s in the Bible?  Buck Denver, the main character puppet in this series, also hosts a brand new video that answers many of our questions about Christmas.

Why Do We Call it Christmas?, a 60-minute DVD with a blend of animation, puppetry, and narration from Mr. Vischer himself, tries to explain the modern day festivities of Christmas and how they relate to the birth of Christ.

This video was enlightening to me. I didn’t know a lot of the reasons we do the things we do at Christmastime or even why we celebrate it when we do! It was as enjoyable for me as it was for the kids!

This video is jam-packed with information! It kept the attention of Big Brother (almost 4 years old)  for the entire 60 minutes due to the fun colors, songs, and puppet voices, though I don’t know how much of it he really understood. This video would be absolutely perfect for school-aged children all the way to adults! And even if you don’t have a school-aged child, this would make a great gift!

And in case you’re wondering, Why Do We Call it Christmas? tells the factual information about St. Nicholas, why we call him Santa Claus, and how he came to have a place in the Christmas holiday. That’s as much as is said, so if your child still “believes” in Santa, it won’t cause your child to stop “believing”…although it might provoke some thoughtful questioning, especially from older children. It doesn’t feed into the myths surrounding Santa Claus either.

  73. this is a vey cool concept. would love to share it with my seven year old. last year we very gently told him that mom and dad were actually the real santas who worked very hard to get him the toys that he wanted. he chose to completely disregard the idea. maybe this would open his eyes in a better way.
