Treasure Hunt with Grandpa

Our children are so blessed to have the four best grandparents in the entire world. They are loved unconditionally and each grandparent brings a special, unique relationship to their lives. We are so very thankful for the way our parents are investing in the lives of our children!

But I’m going to brag on my father-in-law a little bit. He is a wonderful grandpa. There are seven grandchildren on my husband’s side of the family (6 years old and younger) and my in-laws are always watching grandkids. They love spending time playing with each child and take note of their individual interests.

On Monday, my father-in-law called me and asked if the boys could come over and play. He was watching my nephew (same age as Big Brother) as well. I had some errands to run, so I happily agreed. When I got there, the boys went searching for a ‘treasure map’ that Grandpa had hidden up behind one of the vents.

Not only was this treasure map authentic (he even burned the edges), it also led to an actual ‘treasure’ that Grandpa hid prior to the boys arrival.

While I was gone they set off for the neighborhood adventure, traveling in none other than a wagon.

“X” marks the spot…

The tin can was filled with simple items found around their house…a magnet, a ball of string, some hot wheels, and some other odds and ends. But to the boys, it truly was a treasure! In fact, Big Brother has been talking about their ‘treasure hunt’ nearly every moment since!

This was such a fun way for the boys to spend some quality time with their grandpa. I’m thinking we might need to do a few treasure hunts of our own!

A special thanks to my father-in-law for sending us these fun pictures!

  1. What a fun activity, and something I’ve never thought to do with my own kids. Great idea! Wow, looking at that map I was impressed how many lakes there are. Our map would just show lots of houses since we live in a big city. It would still be fun. Thanks for sharing. :)

  2. Ever looked into doing Geocaching? My husband and I do geocaching with our 3 year old and 9 month old. Not only is it a fun family activity that is free (except the initial investment for a GPS unit), it gets us outdoors exercising and we’ve visited many places we would never have known about. And with our 3 year old, he loves finding “treasures” as he calls them.
