Book Club for Parents: Intro

I thought I would try something different for Sunday posts, at least for a while. I typically have written a post about a lesson I have learned related to parenting or spirituality, but lately I feel like I’m still trying to learn those SAME lessons (which I apparently didn’t really learn in the first place). :)

So, I’m starting a book club…and ALL of you are invited!!! I recently bought Cleaning House:  A Mom’s 12-Month Experiment to Rid her Home of Youth Entitlement by Kay Wills Wyma and thought this would be a great book to read together!

The issue of entitlement is going to be one of our greatest challenges of parenting our children in this age of immediate gratification and relative prosperity (in comparison to the rest of the world, anyway). We have been recently revising our chore/allowance/commission system, so I am excited to implement some of these tips as well!

Check your local library to see if they have this book or you can order it on Amazon for $10.19 (current price–could go up or down at anytime).

We’ll be reading a few chapters every week and I’ll share my reflections every Sunday (along with a link-up so you can share yours as well). :)

::  Your assignment for next Sunday (July 22) is to get your hands on a copy of this book and read the introduction!

FYI:  I haven’t pre-read this book (except for the back cover), so I’m hoping that it is helpful and beneficial for everyone. For future Book Clubs, I may ask for your book suggestions.

  1. At first glance, I thought this book wouldn’t be helpful, but after already reading the introduction, I think it will be a well-written and helpful book. While reading the intro, I thought back to my own childhood. I was and still am entitled. Homework was a priority for me, so I wasn’t a slacker in that department. However, my mom didn’t have us do traditional chores, and she found it easier to do work for us. I’ve taken that attitude (of procrastinating work, would rather watch TV than be productive) with me into my adult years. My dad was also very attentive of our schoolwork and extra curricular activities and didn’t “push” us to get jobs until summers in between college semesters (which was always a big headache without job experience or connections.) So taking my own experience, and what I’m working on now (which is trying not to be lazy and keeping the house clean), I have a better idea what I want for my children. I don’t blame my parents. Their childhood and teen years were much different for them and they wanted something better for their kids. A balance between the two would be most ideal.

  2. Great idea! I heard the author speak on Christian Family Radio a few weeks back and immediately bought the book! Anything to help us guide our children in the right direction, as they are faced daily with the world of “I want this…I need this…”!

  3. This sounds like a great book, and I love the idea of reading it in a book club to glean thoughts from other parents. I’m thinking about buying the kindle book version (my library doesn’t have this book). I wonder if it would be hard to follow along on the kindle version (no traditional page numbers)?

  4. I recently read this book and loved it! I contacted the author to tell her how much I loved it and she sent me two copies to give away on my blog…you might want to contact her about this as well. She is so kind! And hilarious too, which I’m sure you’ll agree with after reading a bit of her book!
Great idea for a parent book club! I look forward to seeing what other books you recommend!

  5. I was thinking of buying this book because the sense of entitlement is something I have noticed lately in my children and their friends. This made me decide to buy it. It sounds like a lot of fun with a book that I hope will be very informative. I have not started reading yet but hopefully will tomorrow (which is when Amazon tracker says my book should be here…so much for 2 day shipping – it has taken 3 days :) not too worried about it ).
