Facebook Changes and a Request

I figured Facebook would be making some changes after they went public and my suspicions were correct. Facebook is now charging pages (like mine) up to $75 PER POST to ensure that all of the individuals who already “like” I Can Teach My Child on Facebook will see that post in their news feed. Ugh!

FYI:  These images are actual screenshots from my page.

Their reasoning is simple…only an average of 16% of “likers” are seeing a page’s content in their newsfeed. This is true for my page as well.

I am thankful to Facebook. It has helped my blog to grow and, up until now, it has been a free resource. However, I feel like I have spent a lot of time and effort promoting my Facebook page, only to have their algorithms keep people who already like my page from seeing my posts so that I will pay for them to be seen.

Now that I’ve gotten my “rant” out of the way, here’s what you can do. Would you PLEASE help me out?

I promise it will take only a few seconds.

-Go to the I Can Teach My Child! Facebook page.

-Right underneath the Timeline photo, hover over where it says “Liked”.

-Scroll down and make sure “Show in News Feed” is checked.

-After that, please do one more thing! On the same menu as above, select “+ New List”.

-Click Next.

-Then name your list and choose who you want to see it. I would suggest choosing “Only Me.”

That should ensure that you are still able to see my posts in your Newsfeed (until Facebook changes again, that is). :)

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

  1. I could see your post. Making you and others like you pay is outrageous! Too bad there isn’t a dislike button for facebook doing this. :/

  2. Oh they are being so silly about this. what in the world is the point of “liking” a page if you have to go through yet another step to actually see the posts? I have several pages that I like and am now going to have to do this for all of them. It’s an expensive problem for the bloggers and it’s a pain for all of us who read several blogs via facebook. They are becoming a bigger pain than their “free” service is worth.

  3. When I click on the ‘liked’ button as my fan page, the only option it gives me is unsubscribe. I went ahead and liked you as myself though so I could make sure to see your posts. I just thought I’d let you know that it will show up differently if you’re using Facebook as yourself or your fan page. I try to follow educational blogs as my fan page instead of myself so I don’t have such a full feed. But now I think I will go back and like pages as myself and create the lists like you mentioned. :) Thanks for the tutorial!

  4. I rarely click on a blog from facebook, even though I am pretty sure I “like” you on there. I follow you with GFC, so that is how I keep up to date on your posts.

  5. I think we are all making too much ado over this. (I have a business page.) Even without the algorithm, only 16% of our “fans” would see what we post unless they are constantly watching their newsfeed. This is simply a new way to reach more people by increasing how many times they have a chance to see it. If you don’t use it, then nothing changes in how FB has been working for you. And with the steps taken above, you can have more people pay more close attention to your page for free. I don’t know why we are demonizing FB for finding ways to monetize something that is still a free tool for us. If they don’t make enough money, then they go away. And we are left with nothing for all of our hard work promoting there. So, if you want to support them and get a benefit, promote a post. If not, again, nothing changes.

  6. I have frequent “senior moments” when I forget that I have a Facebook acct. Good thing I follow on RSS or I’d totally be in the dark on this. Amazing what Facebook does. I did as you suggested but I will still follow the rss feed on Google reader; that way if I only look at Facebook one a week. I still get your posts.

  7. Hey There. I found your blog using msn. This is a very well written
article. I will be sure to bookmark it and come back to read
more of your useful info. Thanks for the post.
    I will definitely comeback.

  8. I did it! I didn’t think about adding you to a list, since I did have you added to ‘show you in my newsfeed’. Silly FB!

  9. Did it. You were already in my News Feed, but I had no idea about creating a list. Thanks… and I agree that it’s ridiculous for FB to charge to promote your posts!

  10. For those that want to know and have an explanation (although I hate the whole system) of why they are now charging, this is the logic behind it, as I understand it anyway. When you sign up for a page, and you don’t do the show in news feed check, it goes solely on what you’ve been active in. So say Sue has a blog that you love, and you love reading her Facebook posts, but you never “like” each separate post or you never comment, Facebook things you don’t really care about poor Sue, so she stops showing up as often. Your friend Joe doesn’t really post anything that you necessarily care about, but he has lots of funny one-liners and you like them each time he posts them. Facebook how now decided that you care a lot more about Joe’s one-liners than you do about Sue’s information. So now Joe’s posts will show up consistently at the top of the page. The ability to promote over rides that algorithm. Sue can pay so that even those who don’t interact with her site, will still see her posts up at the top of their page, and be more likely to notice them. You’ll still find Sue’s post on your page either way, but they’ll be much more buried if she hasn’t promoted them, you haven’t push to show her posts on your feed, or if you haven’t interacted a lot by “liking” or commenting.

Besides that information I wanted to thank you for not only including information about how to get your blog to show up on our pages, but also how to create the lists. I think if more people knew this information, and how to create lists more people wouldn’t ignore certain posts and the whole facebook thing would be more efficient. It’s SO much easier now that I have all my homeschool stuff in one list, my coupons/freebies in another, and my friends & family in another. It helps to focus, and helps me not to miss things, since not everything is trying to show up on one page.

  11. I did it! I love getting your posts. I just can’t believe they are doing this. Is all about the money!! Keep up the good work! You are an inspiration to me. Thank you!

  12. I just wanted to thank you for this site. You have helped me with knowing what next I need to work on & to know what level my child is on. Thank you for being so thorough with all of your posts. Very informative & helpful for those of us trying to start homeschool… Thanks again & God bless you and your family!
