What Works for Us: A Day in the Life

A sweet reader requested I do a post on “a day in the life”. Our daily routine is not really interesting enough to even mention…but hopefully the pictures make it a little more fun. :)

Big Brother typically wakes up between 7 and 7:30. Little Brother soon follows. I wake up when the boys wake up…I am SO not a morning person!!!
 Good morning, Sunshine!
Potty time!
A Little TV Time while I get Little Brother’s bottle ready (I had to stop nursing at 7 months). Veggie Tales is Big Brother’s favorite!
Oh, and somebody put Big Brother in a Pull-Up last night instead of a diaper…so I have to throw the sheets and mattress pad in the washer.

First fit of the day–Veggie Tales is over and he is upset.

Good morning, sweet pea!

More laundry to fold…

Both boys (and myself) are dressed and ready for the day–now it’s time for breakfast. Yogurt, a clementine, and a microwave scrambled egg are on the menu today.
I’m just not fast enough with the baby food for Little Brother!

We try to get out of the house for a little while before 10:00 (Little Brother’s naptime). Some days we go on a walk, to the park, Bible Study on Tuesdays. Mondays we go to our library for “Baby and Me” Storytime.
And, sadly enough, we also usually stop here to get my Dr. Pepper fix for the day.
Back home…Little Brother heads to bed for his nap (usually 10:00-12:00).

Once Little Brother goes down, I try to get my Bible Study for the day in…
…while Big Brother plays by himself.
After that, Big Brother and I spend some intentional time together. This is typically the time of day when we do most of our learning activities and projects. We also read books a lot during this time.

Little Brother wakes up around noon (sorry for the blurry picture) and gets his bottle.
A little play time for the boys together…

And reading time
Then lunch around 12:30. I was really creative today with lunch–Natural Hot Dog, cheese, and fruit salad (yummy, yummy). And Little Brother eats baby food.
Next, we typically sing some sings and read books together. Or at least we used to, but Little Brother now doesn’t like to sit still to be read to *sigh*.

Both of the boys go down for a nap around 2:00 and typically wake up around 4:00.

This is where I:  do more laundry, empty the dishwasher, reload the dishwasher, pick up toys, start dinner, and work on my blog!

Dinner Tonight:  Stromboli. Yummy!

I also frequently make my meals ahead of time and put them in the freezer just prior to cooking.

The boys wake up around 4:00. Big Brother ALWAYS wakes up gru-mpy, so some days he watches a little TV just after his nap.

Daddy comes home around 5:45 and we eat dinner.

Next we spend some family time together–go on a walk, play in the yard, or just play together in the house. Prince Charming and I have an understanding that the TV will not be on when the kids are awake, unless it is a show they are watching. We don’t have cable, so this is pretty easy to do.

Bath Time around 7:30

And we try to have both boys in bed at 8:00.

And that’s the end of our day (with the children, anyway).

What about you? What is your daily schedule?

  1. Thanks so much for this, Jenae! You are so kind to take the time to respond to my request so quickly and with such fun photos too. Loving those pics of your sweeties. Boy, breakfast, lunch and dinner sure do look delicious! Your day looks a lot like ours actually…except, as I mentioned, we do watch a bit more TV these days. But we're working on that ;) THANKS AGAIN!

  2. Oh my gosh I LOVE THIS!!! This is almost exactly my schedule on the days I'm home with the babies, and really, my husband's schedules on his days home. We always get such weird looks from our friends that it's nice to see someone else has nap times right before meals (so much easier than after in my mind) and allows a little Veggie Tales inbetween from time to time. Thanks for posting!

  3. Krista, the chairs are "Anywhere Chairs" from Pottery Barn Kids. They are kind of pricey (I got the covers on sale and bought one of the foam inserts on E-bay), but they were Christmas/Birthday presents for both the boys. I love them and so do the boys!!!

  4. I just found your blog and I love it! My youngest 2 (of four) are about the same ages as yours so it's helpful to see how you structure your day.

And you're my new favorite blog, simply because of our kindred obsession for Dr. Pepper!

  5. I just found your blog with the hanging bookshelf idea. :) I'm also a former elementary teacher, and have two little boys – almost 2.5 & almost 1. Life is crazy but good!

  6. Love the Dr. Pepper "fix" sidenote! For myself, it is a swing by McDonald's for $1 coke. Thanks for sharing the great things about your day and the not so great parts. It is encouraging to this momma!

  7. I am amazed at the amount of time your kids sleep. Yes, your kids seem pretty normal, its just that mine don't nap long at all and today I am so jealous :)

  8. Hi there!,, just now read this blog… Real nice of u to share.. I myself have a 4.5 yr boy and 1.3 yr girl. And the little one i must say is very naughty and mischevious. I dont get to spend enough time with the elder one cos of her. As she takes nap just one hour in whole day. Can u ppl give me some ideas. Of how to keep her busy for some creative time spending with my son…. She wants to do everything that the big brother is doing.. I hope to get some ideas from. Lovely ppl
