Toddler Shoe Game

We attempted this shoe game with Little Brother today, but he wasn’t quite getting it. He is great at following one-step directions, but isn’t developmentally able to understand the concept of picking the “matching” shoe. I would highly recommend this activity for ages 18 months and up.

Here’s how to play:

1. Put pairs of shoes in a pile. Do 2-3 pairs for younger kids and add more as you feel your child is ready!

2. Let your child choose one shoe. Give him a one-step direction to bring it to you.

(Little Brother just wanted to look at his shoes)

3. Once he’s brought it to you, give him another one-step direction to find the other shoe that matches.

4. Line the matching pairs of shoes up as he finds the match (or let your child do it if able).

This is a great language and cognitive exercise. Your child must follow one-step directions and have the cognitive ability to recognize the similarities in “matching” shoes.

  1. you probably need more than one pair of shoes to do this LOL I'm not even sure if my 3 yo would get this, but I may have to try it.

  2. My 2.5yr old has been ALL OVER "things that match" … I may well just go and hit up the mass of shoes by our front door and get her to help me sort them and clean them up – what better way to clean than making a game out of it?! Yet again, another lovely idea – LOVE your blog!!

  3. We do this outside (no shoes allowed in) all the time! The kids love it!! I even have a post on my blog about it…actually the kids started this game all by themselves. So cute!! great idea!

  4. What a clever way to integrate learning and play for active toddlers! I shared on twitter (@candaceapril) and facebook (my Naturally Educational page).
