Lipstick Tube Monster

Prior to having kids of our own, whenever I held a baby in church and didn’t have any toys to entertain them with, I would always give them my lipstick tubes from my purse to play with.  The babies could never open the tube, but they loved holding it in their hands.  I now cringe a little, knowing that those tubes had not been properly sanitized, but I can claim ignorance.  :)

As I used up the last bit of my lipstick, I decided I would use it to make a puppet of sorts.  After all, twisting the tube offers some great fine motor practice!  Just a warning, however, the items that go into the lipstick tube must be about the diameter of your pinky.  Obviously, this is not a toy for babies (or any child who still puts items in his/her mouth).  But it is sure to entertain and surprise your preschooler the next time you are in a place where you must be quiet!

Here’s what you’ll need:  lipstick tube (cleaned out…it’s harder than you think), the smallest pom-pom you can find, scissors, a pipecleaner, and a hot glue gun.

1.  Clean out the lipstick tube.  A q-tip worked well, but I ended up wrapping my pinky with a paper towel and twisting to clean it out.

2.  Wrap the pipe cleaner as tightly around as you can on one end.  Once you have it as tall as you’d like (mine was about 1 inch), cut it.  This will be the ‘stand’ for the pom-pom.

3.  Hot glue the pipe cleaner into the lipstick tube.

4. Hot glue the pom-pom on next and then the googly eye!

Twist and put the cap on to take along!

I’m envisioning doing one for each color…but then again, that would require me to go through a lot of lipstick!

Build A Monster!

Go Away, Big Green Monster has been one of our favorite books to read lately!  This is a wonderful book for young children because it is repetitive and has a predictable pattern (as is Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?).  After hearing it 2-3 times, young children can then “read” it to themselves, (which, of course, they aren’t actually reading but applying the repetitive pattern) making them feel successful!

I thought it would be fun to create a way for the boys to “build” the monster while reading (or even reenact the book later).  So I dug out some old felt and got to cutting!

I used the book as a guide and drew the outline on the felt.

I didn’t have any purple felt, so I just used a marker to color purple on the gray.  I wouldn’t recommend this, though, as it tends to get on your hands even after you think it is “dry”.

All the pieces ready to be assembled…

Ta-Da!

Store in a gallon-size baggie and take along to church, doctor’s offices, etc…with or without the book!

This was super easy!  And I know the boy’s are going to love it!

M is for Monster

Use the letter “m” to make a unique monster!  All you need is a piece of cardboard, some fuzzy fabric (cut into squares), wiggly eyes, glue and a sharpie.

1. Take a piece of cardboard and using a Sharpie, write the letter “m”.

2.  Let your child glue the fuzzy fabric pieces onto the letter m.  You’ll go through lots of glue!

3.  Add the googly eyes and any other accessories!

Playdough Monsters

This was Big Brother’s favorite monster activity yet!  He spent over an hour playing with the playdough monsters…which is like an eternity in little boy time!  We used wiggly eyes (sent to us by Craft Project Ideas), pipe cleaners, and some uncooked spaghetti!

Here are just a few of our many creations creatures…
